Skin + Me Cleansers and Moisturisers with Dermatologist and Head of Medical, Dr Jason Thomson

With this week’s launch of Skin + Me’s brand new Purify + Prep Cleansers and Soothe + Smooth Moisturisers, we’re celebrating the joyful three-step simplicity of a cleanse, treat and hydrate routine.

We caught up with our Dermatologist and Head of Medical, Dr Jason Thomson about the motivations and science behind your wraparound Skin + Me products, designed by dermatologists with your best skin in mind.

Skin + Me: Why did you decide to create a cleanser and moisturiser? What problem are you trying to solve?

Dr Jason Thomson: It’s really important when using powerful active ingredients to have a simple, supportive and stripped-back skincare routine consisting of a cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. We wanted to create a cleanser and moisturiser set that works perfectly with our personalised treatment cream and that can cater for all skin types. Convenience, efficacy, expertise and sustainability are key pillars of our brand, and by developing our own supporting products, we can put these features at the centre of what we create.

When developing our Cleanser and Moisturiser, we wanted to ensure we only included ingredients that nourish, strengthen and protect the skin barrier and made sure to avoid any potentially irritating or unnecessary ingredients.

Skin + Me: What was key when deciding on the final formulations?

Dr Jason Thomson: For our Moisturisers, we’ve included dermatologists’ favourite skin barrier-boosting and soothing ingredients that are clinically proven to deliver excellent moisture and protection to the skin. 

Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are two of the most effective humectants available (ingredients that attract and draw moisturise into the skin) and are included in our Moisturisers alongside three ceramides that work to strengthen and boost your skin barrier. 

We’ve also included allantoin and betaine which work to soothe and settle the skin which is important when using powerful, potentially irritating active ingredients. 

Our Rich Moisturiser also includes shea butter which is one of the best emollients available and is packed with antioxidants. The formulation elegantly locks in moisturises and soothes the skin – it’s the perfect partner for dry and balanced skin types.

We’ve developed our cleansers to be gentle, hydrating and effective so that they’ll remove the daily build-up of dirt, oil and any makeup or sunscreen on your skin. When using our treatments it’s important not to use cleansers that are too stripping as this can increase the chances of irritation and damage your skin barrier. We’ve opted for gentle surfactants to cleanse the skin so you won’t find harsh ingredients such as SLS. Our cream-to-foam cleanser gives a lovely light foam with really gentle surfactants such as coco-glucoside so it’s perfect for oily, acne-prone skin.

It goes without saying that ensuring our formulations are vegan and cruelty-free was non-negotiable.

Skin + Me: What do you think your patients will be most excited about by these new products?

Dr Jason Thomson: Having these products developed with dermatologists who truly understand the needs of your skin when using powerful, active ingredients. We believe strongly in a stripped-back, supportive skincare routine to protect your skin barrier. This is reflected in these products. They’ve been carefully considered and we’ve not included anything we don’t think you’ll benefit from.

Skin + Me: Why now?

Dr Jason Thomson: We’re a relatively new company and for the first year, our Dermatology Team at Skin + Me have been working hard to develop the treatment creams and expand the number of skin conditions we can treat. 

Last year saw the introduction of our rosacea and melasma treatments and so democratising dermatology has been our primary focus. Now we’ve got the treatments into a good place, our focus has now moved on to how we can give our customers the perfect, complementary full skincare routine based on our knowledge of what works and our experience of the best products that get the best out of your skin. 

This is just the beginning. Sunscreen is another key product that we’re not currently offering. Watch this space.

What makes this Cleanser and Moisturiser different to all of the other products on the market?

Dr Jason Thomson: These products aren’t bringing anything completely new to the market. We’re not packing them full of the latest fad ingredients. Dermatologists see skincare trends coming and going and we wanted to create products with ingredients that work and that have good scientific evidence backing them up. 

They’re simple, effective and what does differentiate them is that they’ve been specifically formulated with the Skin + Me customer in mind.
