class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ask A Dermatologist: Is Chocolate Bad for Your Skin?<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">First things first, there\u2019s no upper age limit on advent calendars \u2013 cased closed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that out of the way, Christmas is awash with sweet delights, from chocolate Santas to selection boxes. As a result, you might be wondering how much of an impact this festive period is going to have on your skin. We asked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Malvina Cunningham<\/a>, Consultant Dermatologist at Skin + Me, if a few days of chocolate indulgence can really cause breakouts. Here\u2019s what she told us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is chocolate bad for my skin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, the clinical relationship between diet and skin, and in particular when it comes to acne, has been controversial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors previously thought that the things we eat had nothing to do with skin diseases, whereas now we definitely know it plays a role. The exact relationship between diet and skin still isn\u2019t clear but one thing\u2019s for sure \u2013 it\u2019s really difficult to perform studies in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-nutritionist-on-food-supplements-wellness-and-skincare\/\">nutrition<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of studies have evaluated the effect of sugar consumption and low-glycaemic load diets on acne. However, there\u2019s not enough evidence yet to support any strong conclusions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown an association between the two, but since large numbers of participants are needed for these studies, it\u2019s too difficult to isolate one food or nutrient only to show a direct effect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants may have varying food patterns, daily behaviours, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/community-wisdom-mothers-day-how-do-your-genes-influence-your-skin\/\">genetics<\/a> and risk factors that will all influence the outcomes. There\u2019s a big variation between different types of chocolate too, for example: milk and dark chocolate, added sugar content and other added ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study may show that there is an association with a particular food and skin condition, but this doesn\u2019t necessarily prove causality and could be influenced by many other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does sugar and dairy affect my skin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several studies provide evidence that amino acids derived from milk can stimulate insulin and IGF-1 secretion \u2013 a growth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-how-do-hormones-affect-my-skin\/\">hormone<\/a> known to be essential in the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-skin-and-me-guide-to-acne\/\">acne<\/a>. Indeed, a number of studies also report that dairy intake (whether full fat or skimmed) is associated with a higher incidence of acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to sugar and acne there is evidence that high glycaemic index foods are associated with increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/managing-prescription-skincare-side-effects\/\">inflammation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-skin-and-me-guide-to-acne\/\">acne<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these studies only show a link between dairy, sugar and acne, and can\u2019t tell you if dairy or sugar is actually the cause of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-skin-and-me-guide-to-acne\/\">acne<\/a>. And, more importantly, these studies don\u2019t prove that cutting sugar or dairy out of your diet can actually help to get rid of acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA number of studies have shown an association between sugar consumption and dairy, in particular semi-skimmed milk and acne,\u201d Dr Malvina explains, \u201cThese studies also vary greatly in quality, and they don\u2019t take other dietary factors into account, such as a lower glycaemic index, or calorie intake in individuals who consume less dairy as part of their natural daily diet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cCurrently there is no specific diet advice for patients with acne as the evidence is not conclusive.\u201d<\/p><cite>dr malvina cunningham<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is dark chocolate better for acne than normal chocolate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot all chocolate is the same, and the amount of sugar and other additives will vary, as will other factors such as fats. In theory, chocolate with lower amounts of sugar is less likely to cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-skin-and-me-guide-to-acne\/\">acne<\/a>, but the lack of substantial evidence to link the two would mean that no one can say for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content and the least amount of added sugar is probably the best choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Should I stop eating chocolate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, only if you don\u2019t want to eat it! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/acne-face-map\/\">Acne<\/a> is a complex condition with multiple triggers and our understanding currently does not suggest that avoiding chocolate alone will reduce your chance of acne. \u201cThat is not to say however that nutrition doesn\u2019t play a role. On the contrary, the field of nutrition and its influence on health is exploding.\u201d A healthy, balanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/category\/lifestyle\/diet\/\">diet<\/a> is beneficial to your overall health and wellbeing and that will ultimately also be good for your skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI do have patients that have benefited from reducing sugar and or dairy in their diet but many haven\u2019t noticed any difference in their acne at all.\u201d<strong> <\/strong><\/p><cite>dr malvina cunningham<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As always there doesn\u2019t seem to be one piece of advice that fits all, and it is clear that broad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/category\/lifestyle\/diet\/\">dietary<\/a> advice doesn\u2019t work for individuals. Dr Malvina tells us, \u201cI do have patients that have benefited from reducing sugar and or dairy in their diet but many haven\u2019t noticed any difference in their acne at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Dr Malvina suggests \u201cmanaging acne with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-combining-cosmetic-and-beauty-treatments-with-tretinoin\/\">combination<\/a> of evidenced-based medical treatment as well as individualised healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/category\/lifestyle\">lifestyle<\/a> advice.
