The never-ending cycle of new launches means that we\u2019re often overwhelmed with options, and then there\u2019s the issue of not-so-sustainable packaging. Hands up \u2013 who\u2019s guilty of throwing half-used products away without thinking about where they\u2019ll end up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the biggest changes to preserve our planet need to come from governments and big business, there are plenty of small changes we can all make to reduce our everyday waste \u2013 especially when it comes to our beloved beauty rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/\" data-type=\"post\">The Dose<\/a>, we\u2019re sharing six simple steps you can take towards a more sustainable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/how-to-build-a-skincare-routine\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3629\">skincare routine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Ditch the disposables<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of micellar water, you\u2019ll probably go through quite a few cotton pads. Most of us use at least three cotton pads per cleanse that go straight in the bathroom bin. That\u2019s 21 cotton pads a week, 84 a month and over a thousand each year! The same goes for cotton buds too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though cotton is a renewable resource, it uses huge amounts of water to process. Over-use of water drains natural resources, and it can lead to environmental destruction. The same goes for non-organic cotton, which is often sprayed with pesticides that wreak havoc on animals and plant life. Add the bleaching process to make cotton pads and buds, and it&#8217;s not as sustainable as you might expect.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives available. You can find affordable washable cotton or muslin pads at most high street chemists, and cotton buds can be swapped for silicone swabs. And it\u2019s not going anywhere soon \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.au\/news\/blogs\/the-lifecycle-of-plastics#:~:text=Plastic%20bottles%20%E2%80%93%20450%20years\">a plastic bottle takes around 450 years to break down<\/a>, and even then it will still exist in the form of microplastics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s hard to eliminate plastic from packaging entirely, some brands are now exploring refillable options. This allows you to top up your bottle or dispenser when you run out of the product inside, without throwing the whole thing away. Whether it\u2019s hand soap, makeup or deodorant, we can all make a difference by seeking out options that don\u2019t end up in landfill after a single use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Switch to skinimalism<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea of a 10-step skincare routine seems decadent, but it doesn\u2019t need to be that way. Think about those half-empty jars of unfinished creams and discarded serums that didn\u2019t quite suit your skin. Cluttered bathroom shelves aren\u2019t a vibe, and they aren\u2019t very green either.<br><br>That\u2019s where skinimalism comes in. Instead of buying every product that generates a buzz on TikTok, build a smart routine using products that actually work. Multi-taskers can save you time, energy and money. Some smart beauty brands are thinking about how we can give a new lease of life to the materials used in the 120 billion units of packaging produced by the global cosmetics industry every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skincare packaging holds creams, gels and liquids, meaning that you might need to do some research before you throw them in the little green bin. Wash them out before you recycle them and check the labels along with your local council restrictions to ensure you\u2019re disposing of them correctly. Or, sign up to a recycling scheme \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terracycle.com\/en-GB\/brigades\">TerraCycle<\/a> has a variety of programmes so you can send or drop off your empty containers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picking metal or glass over plastic is a good shout, as they can be recycled more times than plastic. Shop your existing skincare stash<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of us accumulate skincare and beauty products more than we\u2019d like to admit, but it\u2019s worth doing a quick inventory of everything you already have and striving to use them up before you buy something new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most skincare products expire after about two years from opening, so keep an eye on expiry dates and the PAO (period after opening) symbol. In the interest of staying sustainable, empty out anything expired and then reuse or recycle the packaging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we might not be able to change the world with our beauty regimes, it\u2019s a good place to begin.
