Elle Woods was right about that, but exercise does much more besides. It keeps you healthy, can help clear your mind and balances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/3-ways-to-link-skin-and-mental-health-from-acne-to-rosacea-and-skin-ageing\/\">hormone<\/a> levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re a certified gym bunny, a casual swimmer or just a fan of the #hotgirlwalk, exercising in any way shape or form is good for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-link-between-mental-health-and-our-skin\/\">mind<\/a>, body and soul \u2013 but what about your skin? Today on The Dose, we&#8217;re taking a look at the effects exercise has on your skin, and give you our top pre and post-workout skincare tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Skincare for the gym<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While we love to imagine that getting plenty of exercise keeps our skin clear, that isn\u2019t always the case. Consultant Dermatologist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Malvina Cunningham<\/a>, explains that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/blog-skinandme-com-ask-a-dermatologist-where-do-my-spots-come-from\/\">breakouts<\/a> can be caused by excessive sweating and build-up of oil, dirt and bacteria which can cause or worsen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/acne-treatment\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/acne-treatment\">acne<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that if you\u2019re exercising regularly and not cleansing thoroughly afterwards, oil may build up and lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/blog-skinandme-com-ask-a-dermatologist-where-do-my-spots-come-from\/\">tell-tale spots<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/acne-treatment\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/acne-treatment\">Acne <\/a>on your <a href=\"http:\/\/skinandme.com\/myth-buster-hair-and-scalp-care\">forehead<\/a> can also be caused by exercising regularly, getting sweaty, and a build-up of oil in the hairline. Wash your hair regularly and make sure you use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/full-routine\">gentle cleanser<\/a> to keep your skin clean and fresh after exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Malvina also suggests that <em>acne mechanica <\/em>(a type of acne caused by friction and pressure on the skin) is commonly associated with exercise, \u201cIrritation to the pilosebaceous follicles (the hair follicle and its accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/oily-skin-101-oily-skin-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\">oil gland<\/a> unit) can lead to whiteheads or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-blackheads\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2478\">blackheads<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Skincare for swimming<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lido, leisure centre or lake, it\u2019s a good idea to prep your skin beforehand. An easy way to protect the delicate skin on your face is with an occlusive moisturiser for a protective layer on your skin \u2013 some light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/truth-and-tiktok-skincare-trends-face-icing-dermaplaning-and-slugging\/\">slugging<\/a> is fine here! Most moisturisers have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/full-routine-launch-skin-and-me-cleanser-and-moisturiser\/\">occlusive<\/a> properties \u2013 the thicker the texture of your moisturiser, the more occlusive it is. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/sunscreen\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/sunscreen\">Sunscreen <\/a>is non-negotiable when you&#8217;re outside, and you\u2019ll need to regularly reapply the factor 30+ throughout the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chlorine can have a big effect on your skin too. It&#8217;s great for keeping public pools clean, but not so great for your skin \u2013 it strips away all-important moisture. If you\u2019ve ever felt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/dry-skin-101-dry-skin-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\">dry<\/a> and itchy after taking a dip, now you know why. The best thing you can do is to wash immediately after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Follow up with a moisturising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/bodycare-strawberry-legs-stretch-marks-and-more\/\">body lotion<\/a> and your skin should be fine. The same advice applies to salt water, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/best-dermatologist-recommended-products-for-winter\/\">dehydrates the skin<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chlorinated water and natural salt water can also have an effect on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/myth-buster-hair-and-scalp-care\/\">hair and scalp<\/a>. It\u2019s best to wet your hair in a shower before you get into a pool (or any other body of water) as this prevents further water absorption (a swimming cap helps too!) and wash it well afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Skincare for outdoor exercise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re running around your local park, hiking up a hill or going for a walk around the block, there\u2019s nothing like the great outdoors. We all know how important green spaces are to our mental health, and the same goes for our skin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Malvina explains \u201cSpending time outside is a natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/3-ways-to-link-skin-and-mental-health-from-acne-to-rosacea-and-skin-ageing\/\">stress and anxiety<\/a> reliever. Stress causes a chemical response in our bodies which leads to skin inflammation and sensitivity, it also triggers issues like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/acne-treatment\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/acne-treatment\">acne<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/rosacea\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/rosacea\">rosacea <\/a>or eczema and slows down the skin\u2019s natural ability to heal itself. Meaning skin issues are prolonged which leads to increased stress. Therefore, the less stress you have the happier your skin will be \u2013 so get outside in nature as much as you can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercising outdoors also means you\u2019re getting a good dose of much-needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-the-sun-guide-freckles-sun-spots-spf-and-makeup-know-how\/\">sunlight exposure<\/a>, enabling your body to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/hello-sunshine-why-we-need-vitamin-d\/\">vitamin D<\/a>. It\u2019s essential for us to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate and helps to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy.
