This is not just the case with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/\">Skin + Me<\/a> treatments \u2013 it can happen with any acne or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skin-ageing-101\/\">skin-ageing<\/a> treatment that contains prescription strength and even over-the-counter active ingredients.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purging is known to occur in up to a quarter of people with acne and even in some people who don\u2019t already have acne. The increase in skin cell turnover may initially lead to more blocked pores before the skin starts clearing entirely. Think of it like a spring clean \u2013 just a temporary side effect on your way to clearer skin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>How long does skin purging last?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Purging from active ingredients generally doesn\u2019t last for much longer than a month, or six to eight weeks at most.&nbsp;If you&#8217;re still experiencing purging after that amount of time, it\u2019s probably another cause. Ensure your skin remains well hydrated with a non-comedogenic moisturiser (it won&#8217;t clog your pores) and adjust your treatment if your skin feels red and irritated. Make sure to stop using any additional over-the-counter ingredients that could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-am-i-having-a-reaction-to-my-skincare\/\">irritate<\/a> your skin further, like harsh cleansers and exfoliating acids such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-acids-guide-ahas-bhas-and-your-routine\/\">AHA and BHAs<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you\u2019re breaking out after introducing a new moisturiser, sunscreen or serum, there\u2019s something going wrong!
