If you\u2019ve had a little too much of everything this festive season, don\u2019t feel guilty. Indulging is natural, so read on for a toolkit of skincare tips to help you get back on track when you&#8217;re ready. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Festive Skincare Red Flags, And How To Deal With Them<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:18px;text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>Alcohol<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately this has a negative impact on our skin, mainly through dehydration,&#8221; Dr Jason, Head of Medical at Skin + Me explains. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/how-bad-is-alcohol-for-my-skin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1190\">Alcohol <\/a>is a diuretic which means it increases water loss from our blood via the kidneys. This has a knock on effect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSkin can become dehydrated, leading to moisture loss in the upper layers and result in dry, rough patches, regardless of your skin type. It can also cause flushing due to acetaldehyde, a breakdown product of alcohol that stimulates the release of histamine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cAlcohol can have a negative impact on certain skin conditions such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/rosacea-101\/\"> rosacea<\/a>, eczema and psoriasis resulting in flare-ups.\u201d<\/p><cite>DR JASON THOMSON<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, once you&#8217;re finished with the parties, make sure you keep hydrated and reduce your alcohol intake. You should aim to drink around three litres of water a day, and you can also eat water-rich foods and fruit and vegetables to boost your hydration levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:18px;text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>Sugar and chocolate&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it&#8217;s hard to know exactly how closely linked your diet and skin are, some foods can trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-where-do-my-spots-come-from\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2006\">spots <\/a>in some people. \u201cExcessively<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-is-chocolate-bad-for-your-skin\/\"> sugary<\/a> meals (high glycemic index foods) can elevate hormones that increase the activity of oil glands in the skin that can ultimately contribute to acne,\u201d says Dr Jason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aim for moderation and a balanced diet after the festive period to reduce the likelihood of breakouts and hopefully give your skin a boost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:18px;text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>Cold weather and central heating&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLow humidity causes more water loss from the skin. This can lead to damage to the skin barrier and potential dermatitis,\u201d notes Dr Jason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help combat the effects of central heating and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-can-i-use-tretinoin-in-winter\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1613\">chilly weather<\/a>, make sure to moisturise your skin and don&#8217;t over-cleanse. Make sure you&#8217;re using a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/best-dermatologist-recommended-products-for-winter\/\"> moisturiser<\/a> with barrier-friendly ingredients that will retain water and nourish the skin. Dr Jason&#8217;s advice? \u201cUse anti-comedogenic (non-pore blocking) cosmetics. Cleansing twice daily is essential to keep unwanted breakouts at bay and remember to double cleanse in the evening to remove SPF and makeup which can block pores. This also allows your evening skincare to penetrate your skin to exert its effects.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Stick to your routine, with a touch of TLC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the festivities and beyond, sticking as closely as possible to a regular skincare<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-dr-jason-thomsons-skincare-routine\/\"> routine<\/a> can help keep your skin happy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Jason Thomson<strong> <\/strong>explains: \u201cThere\u2019s no one silver bullet (although your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/daily-doser-spotlight-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1513\"> Daily Doser<\/a> comes close!) but rather the key is to have an effective,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/these-are-the-only-steps-you-really-need-in-your-skincare-routine-according-to-a-dermatologist\/\"> simple skincare routine<\/a> that consists of evidence-based ingredients, targeted towards what you want to achieve. As a powerful antioxidant it works to brighten the skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u2018Can you &#8216;detox&#8217; your skin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A post-seasonal skincare review appeals theoretically but what does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/myth-buster-can-you-really-detox-your-skin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4440\">\u2018skin detox\u2019<\/a> really mean and is it even possible? Going easy on our skin and prioritising our health post-indulgence is one thing. We asked<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\"> Dr Jason Thomson<\/a> if we can officially use the D-word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no good evidence backing up any form of \u2018skin detox\u2019,&#8221; he tells us. &#8220;This concept has many different meanings that range from stopping applying all products to your skin to let it reset (skin fasting) to applying (or ingesting) products that claim to promote the skin\u2019s natural detoxing function.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe exception to this is when you\u2019ve<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/what-i-learned-from-breaking-up-with-my-20-step-skincare-routine\/\"> overdone your skincare<\/a>, for instance, by using too many acids and actives resulting in sensitivity, irritation and compromising your skin\u2019s barrier function. If you have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/can-i-use-tretinoin-on-sensitive-skin\/\"> sensitive<\/a>, irritated skin, then stopping these products and going back to a gentle and supportive skincare routine can be considered a type of \u2018skin detox\u2019 and will help you to get your skin back on track.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Spend some time in the great outdoors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Outdoors is free, as they say, so when you want to recover then getting outside in daylight \u2013 will give your mind, body (and skin!) the back-to-best boost you need. Just don\u2019t forget your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/5-dermatologist-approved-spfs-for-everyday-wear\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/meet-skin-and-me-daily-defence-sunscreen-spf-50\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4587\">sunscreen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Dr Jason  says: \u201cSpending time outside \u2013 particularly in green spaces is a natural stress and anxiety-reliever.
