Even if you have genetically-determined skin concerns your environment plays a huge role in influencing the severity of the condition. In a way, it\u2019s the only thing you <em>can<\/em> alter so in that sense, external factors are very important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skin + Me: <\/strong><em>When it comes to lifestyle and genetics, how can we identify a balance between what to accept and what we can change?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr Malvina Cunningham: <\/strong>Lifestyle is more important and the influence our environment and our general health has on our skin can\u2019t be emphasised enough. Our skin shields us from the environment which is constantly attacking it, whether it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-the-sun-guide-freckles-sun-spots-spf-and-makeup-know-how\/\">UV light<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/blog-skinandme-com-ask-a-dermatologist-pollution-defence-and-protective-skincare\/\">pollution<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/best-dermatologist-recommended-products-for-winter\/\">climate<\/a>. Maintaining that health is about daily care \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-dr-jason-thomsons-skincare-routine\/\">routine<\/a> you can have control over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Skin + Me Collective: On our mothers and our skin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We checked in with our Facebook community, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/skinandmehq\/\">The Collective<\/a> to see how your skin shares (or doesn\u2019t share!) traits with your mothers or gene-sharing relatives. Trends we noticed? It seems our mothers have great skin and we can learn a lot from simple, stripped back routines and knowing the power of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-the-sun-guide-freckles-sun-spots-spf-and-makeup-know-how\/\">good SPF<\/a> \u2013 what a smart bunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abby: <\/strong>My mum has always highlighted this is the only skin we have and we should look after it. She isn&#8217;t one for makeup and has embraced the natural all-grey hair in her late 30s \u2013 all genetic, I have had a grey stripe myself since I was 10!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I occasionally think of the cost of my skincare products, but then I hear my mum in my mind saying, I use what I do because it works for me and to maintain my routine to benefit my skin long-term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie<\/strong>: My mum is 60 now and has amazing skin. I think I\u2019ve done relatively well too, thanks to shared genetics. She\u2019s only ever kept it simple but moisturises religiously and does facial exercises specifically exaggerated A, E, I, O, U. It\u2019s definitely worked for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Courtney: <\/strong>My mum is 48 and she looks about 30! All the women in my family look very youthful for their age. We have exactly the same skin type, very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/dry-skin-101-dry-skin-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\">dry<\/a> and sensitive. However, my mum has never had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/blog-skinandme-com-ask-a-dermatologist-where-do-my-spots-come-from\/\">spot<\/a> in her life, whereas I still suffer hormonal breakouts, at the age of 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mum is huge on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-the-sun-guide-freckles-sun-spots-spf-and-makeup-know-how\/\">SPF<\/a> and wears factor 50 every day to help her age gracefully. She\u2019s always drummed it into me to use it but I\u2019ve only just realised how important it really is since hitting the age I am now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><em>My mum is 60 now and has amazing skin. I think I\u2019ve done relatively well too, thanks to shared genetics.\u201d <\/em>Katie<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heather: <\/strong>I\u2019d say l have definitely got similar traits to my mum. She\u2019s in her 70s, skin definitely not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-the-sun-guide-freckles-sun-spots-spf-and-makeup-know-how\/\">sun damaged<\/a> (we\u2019re Irish we don\u2019t tend to see a lot!) and always kept her routine simple, never wears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/community-wisdom-makeup-tips\/\">makeup<\/a> and it shows. In contrast, I\u2019ve definitely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-the-sun-guide-freckles-sun-spots-spf-and-makeup-know-how\/\">sun-worshipped<\/a> more and not worn the right SPF in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lindsay: <\/strong>My mum is 77 and looks amazing for her age! She has great skin and I hope I look as good as she does when I get older.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mum&#8217;s always had a very simple routine but has always made sure she takes her makeup off before bed. My dad is Italian so I&#8217;ve inherited more of an oily skin type rather than my mum&#8217;s fair skin.
