The body and mind coexist symbiotically, so it\u2019s really no surprise that the state of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-link-between-mental-health-and-our-skin\/\">mental health<\/a> and the state of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/myth-buster-what-does-healthy-skin-look-like\/\">skin health<\/a> often reflect one another \u2013 subconsciously or otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take blushing. It\u2019s a simple short-term physiological reaction. When you blush in the moment, blood vessels in your face expand giving you a flushed look that may signal to others you\u2019re feeling flustered or self-conscious. It\u2019s one visible example of how easily your mental state can affect your skin. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve compiled a list of skin conditions that can be exacerbated by your mental health, and compiled some resources to help start managing that relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to be thriving, not just surviving. Your best skin is (almost) all in the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>1. Rosacea, eczema and psoriasis&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve grouped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/info\/medical\/about-rosacea\/\">rosacea<\/a>, eczema and psoriasis here because although they have differences, they\u2019re all inflammatory skin conditions that can be influenced by our mental health and stress levels. Our Head of Medical, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Jason Thomson<\/a> explains, \u201cWe\u2019ve known for a long time that stress can lead to a worsening of skin conditions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/?s=psoriasis\">psoriasis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/category\/routine\/treatments\/acne\/\/04\/the-skin-and-me-guide-to-acne\/\">acne<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/rosacea-101\/\">rosacea<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/?s=eczema\">eczema<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you feel under pressure (sometimes called our \u2018fight or flight\u2019 mode) your body releases a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol supports the body to deal with this stress but being persistently overloaded with cortisol can be counterproductive. Too much cortisol can reduce the skin\u2019s production of hyaluronic acid (your skin\u2019s natural moisturiser) and this can lead to increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/dry-skin-101-dry-skin-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\">dryness<\/a> and itchiness that you typically find in autoimmune and inflammatory skin conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\"><strong>2. Acne<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/info\/medical\/about-acne\/\">Acne<\/a> is a complex skin condition also caused by inflammation, partly influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-how-do-hormones-affect-my-skin\/\">hormones<\/a>. Overproduction of the stress hormone, cortisol may play a part in skin breakouts because it encourages sebaceous glands to produce more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/oily-skin-101-oily-skin-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\">oil<\/a>. This can block pores. Skin-ageing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019ve explained before, living is ageing but to <em>age well<\/em>, you\u2019ll want to minimise stress and find ways to manage anxiety. Long-term persistent cortisol release can break down collagen in skin, affecting firmness and leading to line lines and wrinkles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>The brain-skin connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The effect of some visible skin conditions on your mental health (and vice versa) can result in low self-esteem, further anxiety, social phobia and in severe cases, depression.
