Today, we\u2019re looking at spironolactone, a drug used to treat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-how-do-hormones-affect-my-skin\/\">hormonal acne<\/a>. Though Skin + Me doesn\u2019t offer tablet treatments for acne, we know that in some cases they can help, so we\u2019re serving up an impartial look at this ingredient. These are things you can manage with the right blend of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-mixing-active-ingredients-with-tretinoin\/\">active ingredients<\/a>, a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/dermatologist-recommended-skincare-routine\/\">stripped-back routine<\/a> and products that suit your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/get-to-know-your-skin-type-dry-oily-combination-and-more\/\">skin type<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if your spots pop up like clockwork when your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/why-does-my-skin-change-with-my-menstrual-cycle\/\">period<\/a> rolls around, then you could have hormonal acne. It\u2019s a common occurrence in women and is usually caused by sensitivity to the small quantities of androgens (male hormones) that women produce. Less often, your entire face, chest or back can be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, how can spironolactone help with hormonal acne?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Spironolactone works by inhibiting the body\u2019s production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-how-do-hormones-affect-my-skin\/\">androgens<\/a>, such as testosterone and also by blocking the receptors the androgens bind to. This reduces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/oily-skin-101-oily-skin-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\">sebum<\/a> production (goodbye to oily skin and clogged pores), fewer comedones (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/five-things-to-know-about-blackheads-and-influencers-who-understand-acne\/\">blackheads<\/a> and whiteheads, be gone!), and less inflammation, swelling and redness. If you also experience excess facial hair growth, spironolactone also potentially helps this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once assessed and prescribed by your GP, you\u2019ll take their recommended dose and you may see results within a few weeks \u2013 research shows that your skin&#8217;s oil production will slow down, decreasing the likelihood of pesky breakouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the side effects of spironolactone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultant Dermatologist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Ben Esdaile<\/a> explains some of the side effects of spironolactone &#8220;If you\u2019re not on the pill, you may experience irregular periods. Other common side effects include nausea and diarrhoea as well as headaches. Breast tenderness is also often reported. Your body can adjust to these side effects in time, and can ease if you\u2019re taking the pill.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other possible side effects of taking spironolactone include dizziness and fainting. Spironolactone is a diuretic, which means you might find yourself popping to the bathroom more often. It can affect your potassium and sodium levels and some people will need these monitored, especially if taking other medications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Ben explains, \u201cYou may also see a warning about breast cancer in the information that comes with the medication. This warning was included after researchers gave animals very high doses of spironolactone and some of the animals developed breast cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is still a controversial aspect of the treatment, and the possibility that this medication increases a woman\u2019s risk of getting breast cancer has not been confirmed by researchers.\u201d\u00a0<strong>Any concerns about side effects should be raised with your GP.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is spironolactone right for me?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is up to your GP or Dermatologist, they\u2019ll assess the severity of your acne and the impact your hormones have on your skin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, if you haven\u2019t responded to other acne treatments or your acne recurs once you\u2019ve finished a different treatment, your GP may prescribe spironolactone.
