The cooling properties of ceramide-rich moisturisers will offer welcome relief to hot, inflamed skin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/dry-skin-101-dry-skin-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2431\">dry skin<\/a> you\u2019re more likely to develop problems with your skin barrier function, which often leads to issues with irritation and sensitivity.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Jason Thomson<\/a>, Head of Medical at Skin + Me explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChoosing a moisturiser with soothing and barrier boosting active ingredients like ceramides, but also urea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-niacinamide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3754\">niacinamide<\/a>, panthenol and allantoin can provide additional benefits and are often found in good moisturisers for dry skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f0f6fd\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>GOOD TO KNOW \ud83d\udca1<\/strong> Ceramides will appear on ingredient lists followed by a letter combination \u2013 you might see ceramide NP, ceramide AP or ceramide EOP written on the INCI. However, there\u2019s very little to differentiate them, so there\u2019s no cause for concern.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ceramides work best with<\/strong>&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Emollients and occlusives&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These moisturiser types form a barrier on the skin to seal in moisture, and work really well with ceramides to keep skin hydrated for longer. Opt for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-vitamin-e\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3834\">vitamin E<\/a>, and jojoba oil (emollients) and shea butter, lanolin and beeswax (occlusives).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Humectants&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These attract and retain moisture, pulling moisture from the air into the upper layers of skin. Look out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-hyaluronic-acid\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3864\">hyaluronic acid<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-glycerin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2657\">glycerin<\/a>, betaine and allantoin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Malvina Cunningham<\/a>, Consultant Dermatologist, echoes this: \u201cHydrating the skin can plump it temporarily, so incorporate a moisturiser that has hydrating and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/your-skin-barrier-protection-guide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2634\">skin barrier<\/a> boosting ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, shea butter and ceramides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Glycolic acid<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/last-minute-skincare-pimple-patches-exfoliating-overnight-masks\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3921\">exfoliating<\/a> and removing dead skin cells from the surface, exfoliants like glycolic acid can help ceramides penetrate the skin more effectively, and better hydrate your epidermis (the outer layer of skin) and your dermis (the middle layer).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Retinoids<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like exfoliants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/myth-buster-the-difference-between-retinol-and-retinoids\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1954\">retinoids<\/a> have a similar effect on the skin, increasing skin cell turnover and removing dead skin cells from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-can-i-shrink-my-pores\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3206\">pores<\/a>, allowing ceramides to go deeper.
