It not only looks and feels great, but you know it\u2019s healthy, replenished and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/community-wisdom-the-best-makeup-for-acne-rosacea-and-pigmentation\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3959\">makeup<\/a> (if you wear it) layers on like a dream.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to achieve this heavenly skin? It\u2019s all down to a nourishing routine, rich in a certain type of ingredient that attracts and retains moisture to your skin, leaving it supple, plump and almost <em>glass-like<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today on The Dose, we\u2019re investigating humectants \u2013 what they are, how they work and where you can find them (hint: all good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/shop\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/shop\">moisturisers<\/a> have them).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are humectants?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever looked up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/glassskin\">glass skin<\/a> hashtag on TikTok, you\u2019ll see hundreds of thousands of videos (with billions of views), complete with ethereal-looking skin and a never-ending list of product recommendations. The ingredient that most of those products have in common? Humectants.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humectants are a category of substances that retain moisture. They\u2019re commonly used in food and medicine along with other industries, and are popular ingredients in skincare products, pulling moisture to the surface of the skin and retaining it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Jason Thomson<\/a>, Head of Medical at Skin + Me, explains, \u201cThey work by attracting and holding onto water from the environment and also from the deeper layers of your skin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humectants also help to keep your skin\u2019s water levels optimal, ensuring that your skin doesn\u2019t get dehydrated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the different types of humectants?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>GLYCERIN<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve already done an ingredient deep-dive on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-glycerin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2657\">glycerin<\/a> here on The Dose, but we\u2019ll sum up the OG of skincare here. Glycerin is a topical moisturiser that\u2019s also a naturally occurring compound in the skin. This is why you\u2019ll often see it referred to in product descriptions and ingredient decoders as \u2018skin identical\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glycerin, in addition to its duties as a humectant, also keeps the skin lipids between our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-science-of-your-skin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3789\">skin cells<\/a> in a healthy (liquid crystal) state, protects against irritation and helps to restore the all-important <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/your-skin-barrier-protection-guide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2634\">skin barrier<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>UREA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like glycerin, our bodies produce urea naturally \u2013 both in our urine and our skin. It\u2019s commonly classified as a natural moisturising factor, and it\u2019s a pretty intense one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It breaks down keratin in the skin, leaving it soft and smooth \u2013 it\u2019s why you\u2019ll often find it in skincare products that target skin conditions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/bodycare-strawberry-legs-stretch-marks-and-more\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3338\">keratosis pilaris<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>HYALURONIC ACID<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Skin + Me favourite, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-hyaluronic-acid\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3864\">hyaluronic acid<\/a> is the <em>it girl<\/em> of skincare \u2013 not only is it a super <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/7-ways-to-save-on-skincare\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4189\">affordable<\/a> active ingredient, it works immediately upon application \u2013 even more so when applied to wet skin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the better-known humectants, hyaluronic acid, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/meet-the-team\">Dr Ben Esdaile<\/a>, Consultant Dermatologist explains, is a misnomer, \u201cThe \u2018acid\u2019 in the name can be misleading here as it doesn\u2019t strip your skin \u2013 hyaluronic acid is actually nourishing and hydrating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt draws in and holds onto moisture from the surrounding environment for a plumper, more hydrated complexion. It\u2019s great for dry, dehydrated skin and an oil-free option for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-skin-and-me-guide-to-acne\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"467\">acne-prone<\/a> skin.\u201d Head to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-hyaluronic-acid\/\">hyaluronic acid deep dive<\/a> for more on this heroic hydrator.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>BETAINE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Betaine is a planet-based amino acid, usually derived from sugar-beets, and a classic humectant. Like others in this category, it attracts and retains moisture in the skin. You\u2019ll find it in both moisturisers from Skin + Me: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/shop\/light-moisturiser\">Soothe + Smooth Light<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/shop\/rich-moisturiser\">Soothe + Smooth Rich<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>SALICYLIC ACID<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While technically classified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skincare-and-acids-guide-ahas-bhas-and-your-routine\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2510\">BHA<\/a>, we can also group salicylic acid in the humectants category because it exfoliates dead skin, allowing moisture to better penetrate the skin, keeping it smooth and soft.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS (AHAs)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lactic acid \u2013 found naturally in milk \u2013 is another exfoliant with hydrating properties. It strengthens the skin barrier, helps the skin produce more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ingredient-deep-dive-ceramides\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4560\">ceramides<\/a> and defends the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-microbiome-skincare-for-healthy-skin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1976\">microbiome<\/a>. We\u2019ve touched on this subject before in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-history-of-skincare\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3126\">History of Skincare<\/a> article, where we learned that ancient societies and historical figures like Cleopatra bathed in goats\u2019 milk (rich in lactic acid) for this reason.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glycolic acid, similarly, helps to keep your skin\u2019s natural hyaluronic acid levels optimal. This, along with its exfoliating properties, make it a great ingredient to have on hand if you want to achieve smooth, glowing skin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s the difference between moisture and hydration?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe key difference between hydrators and moisturisers in skincare is that hydrating ingredients (humectants) actually hold on to and attract water molecules into the skin (from the body and environment)\u201d, Dr Ben explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMoisturisers tend to stop water loss by being more &#8216;occlusive&#8217; and forming a seal over the skin to stop water escaping. Moisturisers tend to have more oil-based ingredients whereas the hydrating products tend to have humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way we categorise ingredients depends on what it actually does for your skin.
