However, that\u2019s all about to change, as this soothing, protective multitasker steps into the limelight and gets the credit it truly deserves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we\u2019re breaking down the benefits of ectoin and finding out why it\u2019s such a worthy addition to your skincare routine. From blue light protection to brightening effects, ectoin boasts an impressive list of benefits \u2013 we spoke to Skin + Me Dermatologist Dr Beibei Du-Harpur to find out more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>What is ectoin?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might already know what an amino acid is, but here\u2019s the lowdown if you\u2019re not sure. Amino acids are molecules that combine to form proteins, which are the building blocks of healthy skin. Ectoin (sometimes spelled as ectoine) is a naturally-occuring amino acid, which was discovered in 1985 by a German scientist when conducting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitop.de\/en\/products\/cosmetic-active-ingredients\/ectoin\">research in an Egyptian salt lake<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This harsh environment gave rise to ectoin\u2019s protective characteristics \u2013 it works hard when under stress. \u201cA lesser-known ingredient that is about to have its moment is ectoin, which was originally discovered as a molecule that enabled certain strains of bacteria to survive extreme environments,\u201d explains Dr Beibei.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEctoin is a surprisingly well-researched ingredient and it has been used in various healthcare applications,\u201d Dr Beibei continues. Its profile is now rising as dermatologists are educating consumers about the benefits of ectoin, and its compatibility with other active ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>What are the benefits of ectoin?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a skincare ingredient, ectoin has been shown to have barrier-supporting, anti-inflammatory and even photoprotective effects,\u201d says Dr Beibei. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Photoprotection: The reduction of skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays, usually from the sun <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8850511\/\">A 2022 study<\/a> found that ectoin is effective in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases, thanks to its soothing properties. So, if strengthening your skin barrier and reducing redness is a priority for you, then it\u2019s worth including ectoin in your regime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ectoin is also a great protective ingredient. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-017-15512-4\">Research shows<\/a> that it can shield against environmental stressors such as extreme temperatures, dryness and even damage from UVA radiation. It can also protect against pollution, which can trigger oxidative stress, a process which can cause cell damage and signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/skin-ageing-101\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3061\">skin ageing<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s not all \u2013 ectoin protects against the effects of blue light too, which may <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36594795\/\">accelerate the skin ageing process<\/a>. It\u2019s also kind to the skin\u2019s microbiome, the delicate balance of microorganisms which protect the skin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3535073\/\">may even help to educate and support an individual\u2019s immune system<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, ectoin can reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/hyperpigmentation-101\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4467\">dark spots and unwanted pigmentation<\/a> while also brightening the skin \u2013 so, if a luminous, even-toned complexion is your goal then ectoin is a useful ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>How to use ectoin<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ectoin is found in a range of different skincare products, including moisturisers, serums and treatments.
