Or pushed hard to meet a deadline, only to have an eczema flare up? This is the brain-skin connection at work. In essence, stress can influence skin health and skin health can influence stress \u2013 and it\u2019s all down to a complex network of nerves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/ask-a-dermatologist-how-do-hormones-affect-my-skin\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1572\">hormones<\/a>, and immune system signals.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your skin is a dynamic organ (in fact the largest one in the body) and it\u2019s your primary sensing organ for environmental stressors, like heat, cold, pain and tension. It also responds to internal stressors. Whether you\u2019re experiencing extreme temperature, or you\u2019re under mental, physical or emotional pressure, your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (AKA the trio of glands that make up your body\u2019s main stress response system) activates. With that, a flurry of stress hormones are released, including cortisol, adrenaline and other key hormones in the fight-or-flight stress response called catecholamines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cortisol has a <em>profound <\/em>effect on the skin. In excess, it can stimulate the production of sebum (the skin\u2019s natural oil) which leads to clogged pores and \u2013 you guessed it \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skinandme.com\/the-dose\/the-skin-and-me-guide-to-acne\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"467\">spots<\/a>. It can also impair the skin barrier, making it more vulnerable to moisture loss, irritants and allergens. So if you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed and looking dry, red or inflamed, cortisol could be the culprit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chronic stress and skin health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that people with high stress levels often experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5910426\/\">disruptions in their epidermal barrier<\/a> \u2013 the top layer of skin that protects us from harmful microbes.
