The science behind the perfect dose

SPF 50 means 1/50th of the sun’s power reaches your face, the testing for which is done based on 2 mg/cm² of skin. True SPF 50 is only achieved when this amount is applied – but most people don’t apply enough sunscreen to achieve the protection promised on the label. 

This is because there’s no clear consensus on how much is enough – especially when the size of a human face isn’t standardised. Varying guidance – like ‘apply two finger lengths’ – is confusing. We set out to fix this.

First we did a study, representative of the British population, with an equal sex split and ethnicity mix, measuring the 95th percentile of a facial surface area (402.2 cm²). Then we built a bigger, precision-engineered Doser that dispenses the exact amount used in SPF testing, based on that average face surface area.

The result? A guaranteed, accurate dose of SPF 50 that takes the guesswork out of sun protection.
