Spotlight on Brighten + Boost hero ingredients

Vitamin C

You’re probably pretty familiar with Vitamin C already. Not only is it an essential nutrient in our diets, but it’s also been a skincare star for a while now – and for good reason. “Vitamin C is one of the most studied and evidence-based cosmetic skincare ingredients and is a true multi-tasker, offering protective and regenerative skin benefits,” explains Dr Jason.

It’s ideal for daytime use, thanks to its protective properties, so our Brighten +  Boost Vitamin C serums are an excellent addition to your AM routine. “It’s an essential antioxidant that aids in the skin’s natural regeneration process and helps to neutralise free radicals, protecting the skin from damage caused by UV rays (when used alongside sunscreen) and environmental pollutants,” says Dr Jason.

“It boosts collagen, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and can improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation through its ability to inhibit melanin production. This coupled with its powerful antioxidant properties make it an excellent ingredient to enhance the skin’s natural glow and radiance.”

Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid is a popular ingredient in evening treatments – many Skin + Me members will have it formulated into their Daily Doser – but it can be safely used by most people during the day too, to maximise its benefits. That’s where Brighten + Boost Calming Azelaic Acid Serum comes in.

“Azelaic acid is a naturally-occurring acid found in grains like wheat and barley and is a very well researched and versatile ingredient that’s been used by dermatologists for decades to treat various skin conditions including acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation,” explains Dr Jason.

“It’s such a great multi-tasking ingredient that most of our Daily Doser night time treatments contain it. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it particularly effective against inflammatory conditions like rosacea and acne.”

So, how does azelaic acid actually work? “It helps to normalise the shedding of skin cells which can help unclog pores and prevents the build-up of dead skin cells within hair follicles which is a key cause of acne breakouts,” says Dr Jason. “Similar to vitamin C, azelaic acid can inhibit melanin production and its powerful antioxidant properties mean it can help prevent the skin from daily environmental stressors.”

If you want to tackle spots, breakouts or the redness associated with rosacea, Brighten + Boost Calming Azelaic Acid Serum will soothe and protect your skin all day, every day.

Peptides

It’s no surprise that we’re hearing more and more about peptides – these versatile ingredients can hone in on specific skin concerns, to supercharge your progress. “Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as building blocks of proteins, such as collagen, elastin, and keratin, which are essential for maintaining the skin’s structure, elasticity, and firmness,” explains Dr Jason.

Different peptides have different benefits, so you can use them to target your personal skin concerns. “In skincare, peptides can serve various functions, from signalling the skin to produce more collagen reducing the appearance of lines, to reducing inflammation, repairing and hydrating skin and improving hyperpigmentation,” explains Dr Jason. “Given their versatility and numerous benefits, they seamlessly integrate into both morning and nighttime routines. They generally play well with other active ingredients so you’ll often find them in good multi-tasking skincare products.”

In the Brighten + Boost Firming Vitamin C Serum, you’ll find peptides that have been specifically chosen for their tightening properties. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, to give them their proper names, boost collagen and improve skin elasticity, helping to tackle the early signs of ageing.

Brighten + Boost Regulating Vitamin C Serum is formulated with Acetyl Hexapeptide-1, a peptide designed to fade areas of hyperpigmentation by regulating melanin pathways. It also has a brightening effect, which clarifies and evens out your skin tone.

Heptapeptide-6 has powerful soothing properties, which is why we’ve included it in Brighten + Boost Calming Azelaic Acid. It reduces pore visibility, relieves itchy skin and protects against irritation caused by changes in temperature, so they’re ideal for anyone who wants cool, calm and collected skin.

Ectoin

You might not be familiar with ectoin yet, but we guarantee you’ll be hearing a lot more soon – we’re calling it right now, it’s going to be one of this year’s most talked-about ingredients.

Ectoin works in harmony with your skin’s delicate microbiome and repairs the all-important skin barrier. It’s also all about protection, shielding against blue light and pollutants, while reducing damage caused by the environment or other ingredients. It’s no wonder dermatologists love this hardworking hydrator, which we’ve included in all three Brighten + Boost serums.
