#PositivePersonalProgress: On Camera with George Pearson
George Pearson. Here’s a chap you want around the house. Not only is George an all round great guy and champion of sustainable, cruelty-free cleaning products – he’s got a penchant for skincare that does what it says on the tin.
Having started his journey with Skin + Me nine months ago, George wanted to target acne and pigmentation. He struggled with purging but after seeing his skin texture improve and acne fade, has improved self confidence to face the world – and his fans on the ‘gram @geo.cleans – with his best skin yet.
As part of our #PositivePersonalProgress campaign across Skin + Me, we spoke to George to find out more.
Skin + Me: You started your Instagram account just a few years ago and have grown slowly to carve a niche for yourself in eco cleaning hacks and a dabble in skincare. How do you think your self confidence has grown in tandem with this project?
George: I’ve never been a shy person but talking on camera and having to listen to myself back was absolute hell at first. Over time I began to get more comfortable with it. I’ve always had an interest in cleaning and skincare so my account was more for me to find like minded people to chat with, learn from and support. The knowledge and research I did around cleaning – and skincare – coupled with the connection I found with other creators is what’s given me confidence.
Skin + Me: You say ‘don’t overthink cleaning’ on your instagram – how do you think this applies to using the Daily Doser?
George: Keep it simple, if it’s over complicated you won’t stick to it – or at least I know I won’t! I also highlight the issue of mixing chemicals and staying safe. A similar idea applies to my skincare routine and active ingredients.
There’s a lot actives in cumulative lotions and potions if you pile them on. That means you can accidentally be damaging your skin and going backwards. The Doser is designed to replace that complexity and take the risk out of skincare.
Skin + Me: You talk about how important sustainability and cruelty-free products are to you. Tell us more.
George: I have shopped cruelty-free for years now, it’s easier than a lot of people think. Cruelty free and sustainable was actually the deciding factor for me to start Skin + Me. The aluminium doser can be recycled infinitely! Who wouldn’t want that? I don’t understand why larger corporations can’t make a similar move!
Skin + Me: You explain in your video, “If I could go back in time I would tell my younger self to not think an oily complexion doesn’t need moisturiser.” It’s crazy what we tell ourselves as we grow up isn’t it? Do you think people are better informed these days about skin type and corresponding care?
George: Yes! The huge amount of information we have to educate ourselves now is great. However, I think there’s more misinformation out there now too. My hope is that the most influential skincare gurus signpost people towards scientific research and science-led brands like Skin + Me.
Everyone’s skin is different and everyone’s opinion has the potential to go viral. I hope people will learn to separate true science and anecdotal opinion better.
Skin + Me: You also say, “Always wear SPF – don’t listen to the old wives’ tales like ‘the sun will clear up your acne’ Obviously, it just doesn’t!” It sounds like you tried everything to tackle your acne – and even got through purging during the first few months of your treatment with your Doser. Does this feel like the definition of #PostivePersonalProgress to you – making it out the other side?
George: My skincare journey has been tumultuous. My acne started at 14-years-old. I tried everything I could find to tackle it. When I first started my Daily Doser I had my fair share of purging but looking at the quality of my skin improving overall, I could sense there was light at the end of the tunnel. I knew I had found the one thing that delivered results for me.
Skin + Me: Lastly, do you have a fave lifestyle or feel-good hack? What’s on the playlist for when you’re steaming the sofa or dusting round the house?
George: Headphones IN. Music blasting and singing at the top of my lungs feels great! I’ve no idea what I sound like to my audience (my two dogs) but in my head I feel like I’m hitting those Celine Dion high notes!
