The criteria for the best skincare ingredients

Our Dermatologists here are looking for the best, fuss-free multitasking heroes that deliver scientifically-proven results when it comes to healthy skin.

They need to have a body of medically robust research behind them so that they deliver visible results. From clearing spots to tackling hyperpigmentation, smoothing skin texture, unblocking pores, treating melasma, rosacea, the signs of ageing and more. Our Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Malvina Cunningham explains in our video round-up.

The skincare ingredients Dermatologists love

Retinoids – specifically tretinoin

“Retinoids are an absolute powerhouse when it comes to skincare and the overall benefits they have when it comes to skin health.”

Dr Malvina Cunningham

Dr Malvina calls out retinoids, (specifically tretinoin) as a skincare number one. She explains how it affects the top layer of skin (epidermis) and a layer below (the dermis), “At dermis-level tretinoin increases collagen and elastin.”

Collagen can be compared to ‘skin scaffolding’ for the face – it strengthens skin against the signs of ageing

N.B Dermatologists don’t recommend using tretinoin if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.

Azelaic acid

“Azelaic acid is a great all-rounder. It helps to unblock pores, and can fight dark spots.”

Dr Malvina Cunningham

Dr Malvina explains how azelaic acid can fight pigmentation caused by sun damage. It treats myriad skin concerns ranging from melasma to acne.

Unlike powerful retinoids (that can cause temporary skin purging) azelaic acid is really well tolerated, even on quite sensitive skin.

Niacinamide

“Niacinamide is a great ingredient to improve the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Helps tackle pigmentation, regulates oil production and acts as a great moisturiser.”

Dr Malvina Cunningham

A favourite of Dermatologists and skincare influencers alike, niacinamide is available over the counter, very well-tolerated and its benefits are available to everyone.

Niacinamide clears acne, fights rosacea and is a great alternative to retinoids that can be harsh. It boosts the production of ceramides in your skin, giving it great moisturising and hydrating properties.

How to add tretinoin, azelaic acid and niacinamide to your routine

Tretinoin is available on prescription only. After a successful consultation with the Skin + Me Dermatology Team, it may be added to your personalised solution Daily Doser treatment. Your Prescriber will direct you on how to use it. It’s recommended you apply once, nightly and always use at least sunscreen SPF factor 30+ daily.

Azelaic acid and niacinamide may also be included in your Daily Doser. Use these as directed. If you use products with these ingredients separately, you can use them morning and evening as part of your normal skincare routine.

It’s recommended that you don’t combine additional active ingredients alongside your Daily Doser. A simple, stripped-back routine is best.

Always cleanse thoroughly and hydrate your skin with moisturiser to suit your skin type. Discover Skin + Me’s Cleansers and Moisturisers for a complete three-step routine and healthy skin.
